Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, the Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, has revealed that a group of individuals vandalized three storage facilities in the state on Sunday. These individuals unlawfully accessed warehouses and unlawfully took away both food and non-food items that were the property of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as well as the state government during the early hours of Sunday, July 30th, 2023.
Governor Ahmadu Finitiri of Adamawa State has issued a curfew in response to the looting incidents.
Furthermore, the Adamawa State Police Command has reported the arrest of 44 individuals involved in these activities. During an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program, the deputy governor elaborated, stating that Yola, the state capital, witnessed attacks on two warehouses, while one warehouse in the Numan Local Government Area was also targeted.
She clarified that the targeted NEMA stores and state government warehouse in Yola were located in close proximity. Intriguingly, rather than breaking doors, the attackers drilled holes into the warehouses’ walls.
Contrary to suggestions that the looting resulted from widespread hunger, she dismissed this notion by asserting that the prevailing hardship in Adamawa is not isolated but rather a shared experience nationwide.
Addressing the speculation that the looted food supplies were part of government-ordered provisions intended to mitigate the effects of subsidy removal, Prof. Farauta stated that the state government’s palliatives were yet to arrive, and preparations were in place to address the subsidy removal’s impact prior to the incidents.
The deputy governor indicated that the curfew might be lifted soon, emphasizing that a comprehensive review of the situation is scheduled for Monday morning.
